Welcome to lircs.weebly.com, the home of the Long Island Radio Control Society. We are a group of recreational Radio Control Airplane fliers located in the Township of Riverhead in Suffolk County on Long Island. Our field has been located on Sound Avenue in Wading River for 28 years, and is chartered by AMA, whose safety and flying rules we follow implicitly. It encompasses two acres of North Shore famland and is a grass field with north/south and east/west runways. Click on the "Our Field" page to see a great photo of where we fly.
Many acres of working farmland surround our site and the over-flying restrictions that occasionally must be adhered to are spelled out in our Field Rules. This is a working farm, and, as such, we must respect certain landlord-imposed field closings during the year; namely: weekends and school holidays during the month of October (pumpkin picking season) and the entire month of December (Christmas tree cut-your-own activity). Because of the size of the field, we are limited in the size of our aircraft, the largest being about .91 engine size (4-stroke) and 84 inch wingspan. Electric planes can be accommodated (as well as smaller helicopters in their own restricted area). There are no flight benches or lean-tos on site. During May through October there is a portable toilet on site for members' convenience. There are also in-ground pipe sockets provided for member-furnished umbrellas for shade. We are currently a group of forty members, whose concern for the environment and our field neighbors, make us err conservatively in the choices of aircraft, engines and/or motors we fly, in order to preserve our tenancy - but we are always looking for more members who share our concerns to join us! Flight instruction is available for beginners by select members of our group.
Club meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month in a Town of Brookhaven recreation hall in Centereach. Meetings begin at 8:00 PM and end at 10:00 PM. If you are interested in learning more about our club, please feel free to attend one of our meetings. Call for directions.
We are a group that truly loves our hobby, flying with one another, sharing tips, and welcoming newcomers both to our group and to the hobby itself. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us, either by email or phone as we always love to meet a fellow flier!
